West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has acted firmly against the doctors involved in the saline scam. On Thursday, she stated from the state secretariat Nabanna that had the doctors fulfilled their duties properly, the pregnant woman and the newborn might have been saved at Medinipur Medical College. Mamata's big action

Five pregnant women became ill after delivery at Medinipur Medical College.

It is alleged that they fell ill due to saline administration. Subsequently, one pregnant woman passed away, and the child of another affected woman also died.

On Thursday, the Chief Minister blamed the doctors for this incident. Referring to the data on medical services in government hospitals, she mentioned that despite improvements in medical services, the mother and child could not be saved because the doctors did not fulfill their responsibilities.

Mamata Banerjee remarked, "If those responsible for people's lives, in whose hands children are born, had performed their duties properly, the mother and child could have been saved."

12 doctors suspended

Mamata Banerjee suggested that if there had been a CCTV camera inside the building, the culprits could have been caught in the act. She recommended installing CCTV cameras inside the operation theater as well.

Chief Secretary Manoj Pant stated, "CCTV cameras are in the corridors, so I cannot know about the doctors' activities." However, like the Chief Minister, he also mentioned, "The surgery protocol was not adhered to. Junior doctors conducted the surgery without senior doctors' presence."

Condition of 3 pregnant women still critical

Of the five pregnant women who became ill post-surgery at Medinipur Medical College Hospital, three remain in critical condition. All three have been transferred to Kolkata and admitted to SSKM Hospital. The Chief Minister noted on Thursday that one of the three is in a critical state.

He remarked that no amount of consolation truly comforts the families of those mothers. They can only criticize the medical system. If those families express concerns, they should be listened to.

CID to investigate saline scandal

Subsequently, he ordered the suspension of the doctors, RMO, and RSVP present at Medinipur Medical College on January 8, the day of the incident. The list includes Dilip Pal, bed in-charge of Unit 1C in the maternity ward, senior doctor Himadri Nayak, RMO Soumen Das, anesthetist Pallabi Banerjee, PGT first-year doctor Moumita Mandal, Pooja Saha, intern doctor Sushant Mandal, and PGT third-year doctor.

PGT first-year doctors Jagruti Ghosh, Bhagyashree Kundu, anesthetist Manish Kumar, department head Mohammad Alauddin, and hospital superintendent Jayant Raut were present on the occasion. Doctor Dilip is accused of conducting surgery outside the hospital that day. The health department has suspended the others on charges of negligence. The CID will investigate them.
