South Korea plane crash: December 29, 2024, is a particularly distressing date for South Korea. On this day, a Jeju Airlines plane crashed at Muan International Airport. The aircraft carried 181 passengers, and all but two of them perished in the incident. A significant revelation has now been made concerning this accident. The South Korean Transport Ministry stated that the plane's black box stopped functioning four minutes before the crash, meaning the last four minutes of recording are missing.


Last 4 minutes of recording missing

The Transport Ministry reported that the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) on Jeju Airlines' Boeing 737-800 stopped working four minutes before the crash, ceasing to record. The reason behind this shutdown is under investigation. The ministry emphasized that CVR and FDR data are crucial for crash investigations, but various data analyses are conducted to determine the exact cause of accidents, and efforts are ongoing to uncover the cause.


Investigation of the accident may take months


The Transport Ministry also mentioned that the cockpit voice recorder was initially analyzed locally and then sent to the US for further verification. The flight data recorder was completely destroyed, and its connector was missing. It has also been sent to the US for analysis by the National Transportation Safety Board. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and the investigation could take months.


How did the Jeju plane fall victim to the accident?


The Jeju Airlines plane was traveling from Bangkok to South Korea with 181 people on board. After landing at Muan Airport, it traveled a short distance on the runway before veering off and colliding with the airport's boundary wall. This resulted in a catastrophic fire on the plane, causing chaos at the airport. The fire brigade arrived promptly upon receiving the alert.
