At least five people have lost their lives, and thousands of homes have been reduced to ashes. The fire brigade is persistently battling a water shortage to contain the blaze.
It is estimated that the fire has caused Los Angeles to incur losses exceeding 50 billion dollars, a sum greater than the GDP of many nations and more than eight times the GDP of the Maldives. This devastating event, occurring after the party's defeat in the US elections, represents a significant setback for US President Joe Biden.
More than one lakh people were evacuated from the area
Following the devastating fire, over 100,000 individuals have been evacuated from the region and relocated to safety. Simultaneously, a new blaze erupted in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, on Wednesday (January 8), prompting further evacuations.
The Palisades fire in the western area has ravaged approximately 15,832 acres. Footage from KTLA TV displayed rows of homes engulfed in flames and plumes of smoke rising in Pacific Palisades.
Loss of more than 50 billion dollars has been incurred
AccuWeather, a private American forecasting company, reported on Wednesday (January 8) that the California forest fires rank among the most destructive in history. Initially, the damage was estimated to exceed 50 billion dollars. Currently, AccuWeather estimates the losses to be between 52 and 57 billion dollars.
