Education: Students failing in the 5th and 8th grades will no longer be promoted to the next class. The central government has removed the 'no detention policy'. Those who fail will have an opportunity to retake the exam within two months.

No Detention Policy : On 23 December, the Union Education Ministry made a significant decision to eliminate the 'no detention policy'. Students who do not pass the annual exams for class 5th and 8th will no longer be promoted. Previously, students who failed were still advanced to the next grade, but this practice will cease. Those who fail will be given an opportunity to retake the exam within two months. If they fail again, they will not be promoted.
In an effort to enhance the quality of elementary education, the Ministry of Education has removed the 'no-detention policy' for class 5th and 8th. This policy previously allowed schools to promote students who did not pass the year-end exams to the next grade. However, no student will be expelled from school until they reach class 8th.
16 states had already abolished the 'no-detention policy'
Following the 2019 amendment to the Right to Education Act (RTE), 16 states and two union territories had already eliminated the 'no-detention policy' for these classes. Now, with the policy's removal by the Union Education Ministry, if a student fails in the 5th or 8th grade, they must pass the exam within two months. If the student does not pass, they will not be promoted to the next grade.
Children will not be out of school
The issued notification indicates that during the child's custody, the teacher will provide guidance to both the child and the parent if needed. Simultaneously, the Union Education Ministry has stated that no child will be expelled from any school before completing primary education.
