Syria Crisis : In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ministers from 17 countries in the Middle East and the West convened to discuss the evolving situation in Syria. The meeting focused on Syria's reconstruction and support for its government, alongside efforts to urge the interim government to establish an administration inclusive of all religious and ethnic communities.
Following this meeting, the Saudi Foreign Minister called for the lifting of sanctions on Syria. Since the establishment of the new regime, Syria has been demanding the removal of these sanctions and the safe return of Syrian refugees from other countries.
One notable aspect of this meeting was the absence of invitations to Russia and Iran, despite their strong alliance with Syria under Bashar al-Assad's leadership. Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani attended the meeting. Following the U.S.'s relaxation of sanctions on emergency humanitarian aid and certain energy supplies last week, Qatar dispatched a gas tanker to Syria on Sunday.
Saudi is playing a big role
Saudi Arabia and Iran are vying for dominance in the Middle East. Hosting this conference is significant for Saudi Arabia, as it demonstrates Riyadh's desire to take a leading role in Syria's reconstruction alongside Turkey and Qatar. Notably, during the Assad regime, Saudi Arabia backed groups opposing Assad.
Western and Sunni countries came together
Ministers from EU and Western nations attended the conference, indicating their desire to advance their interests in Syria while distancing Iran and Russia. Participants included US Deputy Secretary of State John Bass, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Among Muslim countries, foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey were present.
It is not easy to help Syria
Prior to the involvement of Western foreign ministers in the meeting, several Gulf nations had already begun assisting the Syrian government. Because HTS is consistently labeled as a terrorist group, Syrian assets in international banks remain inaccessible. If HTS is delisted as a terrorist organization and the sanctions on Syria are lifted, Syria's path to progress will be facilitated.
